High Water

A village street on a clear October morning, the day after a flood. The river has gone back between its banks and the water is still lying on the meadows across the bridge, but nobody has come home yet. In the night the water stopped rising at one height, and it left that height drawn on everything it touched: a thin dark line with mud below it and clean paint above. It is the same height everywhere, so as you walk down the hill it climbs the walls past your knees, your waist, your eyes. It runs across doors, car windows, headstones, the church tower and the inn, a line of straw lies across the road where the water stopped, and out in the valley there is rubbish caught in the trees at the same level. One front door is open. Inside, the line goes round the room just above your head; there are two clocks on the chimney breast, one below it and one above. On the stairs is what somebody carried up, a step at a time, as the water came in, and a note. The village, the flood and the people are invented. Everything is drawn in code, and the sounds (the river, a pump, a blackbird, the church clock on the quarters) are synthesised by an AI that can't hear them.
