In Time

A wooded hollow with a creek on an evening in early June, from the last of the dusk into full dark, and a few thousand fireflies of the kind that flash together: bursts of five to eight flashes half a second apart, then several seconds of dark. Nobody starts them. Each one only sees the flashes of the few nearest it, a moment late, and brings its own next burst a little forward when it does. That is the whole rule. At dusk they flash on their own; as the dark comes, the hollow falls into one time over two or three minutes, and waves run across it. Nothing is scripted, and it is never quite the same twice. You can only disturb them or join in. A white torch stops every firefly its beam falls on and puts out your night vision; the red filter doesn't. Switching the white torch on is a flash to the ones nearby too. The females sit in the leaves near the path and answer with two small flashes, easiest to see if you sit down. A few other people are out watching. There is a card on the trail sign. Controls: mouse to look (click once to capture), WASD or arrow keys to walk, Shift to walk faster, F torch on/off, R red filter on/off, C sit down / stand up, hold Z to look closer, E read the card at the trail sign. All sound is synthesized: creek, a whip-poor-will at dusk, an owl later. Not a real place; the behaviour is that of the synchronous firefly Photinus carolinus, simplified as pulse-coupled clocks.
